When should I start bringing my child in for dental cleanings?
We recommend that children start seeing their dental care provider at around one year old. While they won’t have all of their baby teeth at that age, it’s important to begin children’s dental cleanings and exams as soon as their teeth start coming in. The earlier they start visiting the dentist, the earlier we can begin their preventive care and catch any problems, should they arise.

This usually depends on your child’s unique dental needs. For children with a previous history or current signs of tooth decay, disease or damage, an X-ray might be necessary. Another factor to consider is how close together your child’s teeth are. Once the teeth start filling in and the sides of the teeth can no longer be seen, we encourage the use of X-rays to identify tooth decay. When you bring your child in for their first visit, we will be happy to assess where they are in their development and if X-rays will be necessary.

How often should my child come in for dental exams?
You may have heard that children only need to go to the dentist once a year, but we recommend our patients come see us twice a year. Biannual dental cleanings and exams from a young age help to keep your little one’s teeth clean and healthy. Seeing the dentist more frequently can also help your child get used to coming into the office, and it is our hope that regular visits will reduce any anxieties that they may have about the dentist. We want our young patients to enjoy coming in to see us, just as we enjoy seeing them!
