Halloween Candy: A Trick or a Treat for Teeth?

Tips for Healthy Teeth This Halloween Consider this mind-blowing fact: Americans will spend about $10 billion (yes, with a B) on Halloween candy this year. And while you are thinking about all the sweet treats you can steal from your kids, we are having nightmares about the harm all this candy can do to our patients’ teeth. “Don’t get me wrong, we like to have fun and we love Halloween,” says Dr. B. “Our office celebrates and has a great time doing it. But with sugary treats, there are some things to consider that can help teeth stay strong and healthy. “When it comes to candy, the scare-level for us varies,” he continues. “Lollipops, chewy candy and hard candy are more damaging because they spend more time in the mouth and are harder on the teeth than other kinds of treats.” So our advice: have fun on Halloween but don’t overdo it. Choose (and chew!) your candy wisely and don’t forget to brush and floss extra-well afterwards! Remember that we’ll be having a Candy Buy Back on Sunday, Nov 6, at West Town Mall. Starting at 1:00 p.m., we’ll be paying $1 per pound for Halloween candy, so be sure to participate and post your photos to our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/childrensdentistryofknoxville/
